Weekly Athletic Recap- Feb 6th

Weekly Athletic  Recap

Below is our weekly recap for the week of February 6th! Thank you to everyone who supported our Coaches vs Cancer weekend. We raised over $4000 for a great cause!

Congrats to our Athlete of the Week - Jacen Holloway

Congrats to all of our Winter Senior Athletes as well! Sunday before the basketball game we celebrated our senior athletes.

MS Blue Basketball

On January 31st  the MS Blue team played St. Margaret and lost 17-10. The Tide 6th grade basketball team had great play on both sides of the ball from both Will Auckett-Stowe ‘29 and Colum Mooney ‘29. Alongside a strong performance by the entire team, Brian Daniel ‘29 and Andrew Stauffer were dominant on the boards throughout the game. Although a frenzied press cut the lead to seven late in the game, the Tide eventually succumbed to St. Margaret’s with the victory. They also played Sacred Heart on Friday and lost 27-25. In a contest that had all of Havertown on the edge of their seats, the Devon Prep 6th grade team dropped a heartbreaker to Sacred Heart. Although up by two with a minute to go, Devon was unable to protect the boards sufficiently, which led to them conceding. However, all players kept their heads held high. They scrapped and competed all game, at one point battling back from a 6 point deficit.  They finished up the week on a high note vs. St. Denis and won 27-24. Fortunately, the 6th grade squad was able to get back on the positive side of the ledger on Saturday. In the second consecutive Havertown heart attack, Devon came up victorious. With a minute to go, the Tide were down by one. However, Will Auckland-Stowe ‘29 drew a foul and cashed both shots to give Devon the lead. On the next play, Andrew Stauffer dove for a loose ball, drawing a foul of his own. With the steadiest pulse in the gym, he promptly cashed his own foul shot, icing the game for Devon and ensuring a win in the Tide’s final regular-season game. Playoffs are to be determined

MS White Basketball

The white team played  St. Norbert’s and won 28-13. On a freezing Saturday morning, Devon Prep braved the conditions to travel to St Norbert’s and the victory. Contributions from everyone in the solid team win.  There were 6 players that scored throughout the game. David Vickers ‘27 and Gustav Najdek ‘27 led the way with 8 points each.  Matt McHugh ‘28 (4 pts), Dean Huey ‘28 (3 pts) Andrew Bouchard ‘27 (3 pts), and John Veith ‘28 (2 pts) rounded out the scoring.  Andrew, Matt and John controlled the boards. Charlie Kleiner ‘28 had his usual solid floor game - getting teammates involved, hustling on defense and hitting the boards.

Freshmen Basketball

The freshman team had a great week. On January 30th vs. Cardinal O’Hara they won 40-32. Jayden Allan Bates ‘26 led the Tide with 14 points as they beat Cardinal O’Hara. The team played well throughout the game and continues to show their growth as they come closer to the end of their season and they followed that up with a win vs Ryan 62-41.  Jayden Allan Bates ‘26 led all scorers with 15 points. Brayden Fisher ‘26 added 7 points.

JV Basketball

The JV team played three great games this week. On January 30th vs. Cardinal O’Hara. They lost 62-45. The entire team played well up and down the court but unfortunately, the Tide couldn’t keep up with Cardinal O’Hara.

They followed the O’Hara game with another great game vs. Archbishop Carroll but came up just a little short and lost 41-34. After controlling the game on both ends of the floor, the team struggled to finish their chances in the 4th quarter. The team was led by Greg Perullo ‘24 with 14 points. They ended the week with a heart breaker vs Ryan. The game was close for all 4 quarters with neither team leading by double digits. The Tide had a late chance to tie or win the game but were unsuccessful. The team was led in scoring by Jabar Oakes ‘24 with 14 points.

Varsity Basketball

This week was a tough week for the basketball team. Playing three tough PCL games the Tide came up short on the scoreboard but the growth displayed by the team will help them moving into the playoffs. The team has two regular season games remaining as they fight for a PCL playoff berth. The team's next game is Friday night at Bonner at 7:00. If the Tide wins this game they will earn a playoff spot.

Ice Hockey

On February 3rd the hockey team traveled to Upland County Day School and lost 4-0. Aidan Wright ‘27 and Josh Vaughn ‘27 made their long awaited Devon Prep debuts on Friday in a matchup against Upland Day School. Josh was a beast on the blue line and Aidan stole the entire show as a revised DP roster challenged UDS at their on-campus rink. Because UDS does not have upperclassmen, Devon’s stars had to sit out the game, but the future Devon stars (Jack Wright ‘29, Jonathan Sullivan ‘28, Brady Wright ‘29, and Chris Vaughn ‘29) made their debuts as well. Unfortunately for the Tide, the entirely new roster did not translate into a bunch of goals and the team fell to Upland 4-0.

Bowling

The bowling team continues to make their push towards the playoffs. On January 31st vs. Roman Catholic the team won 3-1.The Tide took on Roman Catholic in a home PCL match up. The team bounced back in a big way defeating Roman. Sophomore Gavin Ola '25 started the day strong with a 246 in game one. Ola followed it up with a 213 in game two while freshman Giorgio Cipolloni '26 had a 214. Cipolloni dropped a 223 in game three and senior Christian Ottesen added a solid 190 game. The victory secured the season series against Roman as the TIde went 7-1 against them in the regular season!

The next day the Tide took on Holy Ghost in a non-league match up. The squad was defeated by Ghost 3-1 but was able to utilize this match to work on adjustments for the remainder of the PCL season. The Tide had strong performances from two freshmen. Giorgio Cipolloni '26 rolled games of 204, 244, and 196 for a 644 series. Bradley Hart '26 rolled games of 184, 181, and 189 averaging nearly 50 pins over his season average!
