Weekly Recap 1/29

Weekly Recap
Below is our weekly athletic recap. Congrats to our Athlete of the Week - Gavin Ola. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Coaches vs Cancer Weekend!

MS Blue Basketball
On January 27th our MS Blue team played St. Helena  and lost 20-16. The team has a great start to the game with Evan Martin ‘29 and Jackson Fisher ‘29 leading the way and distributing the ball. Then St. Helena came back and went into halftime with the score all tied up. In the 2nd half St. Helena pulled away with two big men scoring most of the points. The team was back at it on January 28th vs. SCJN (Gold) and lost 23-17. Despite a furious comeback in the final two minutes, DP’s 6th grade team bowed out against SCJN by a tally of 23-17. Brian Daniel ‘29 led the team in scoring and rebounding. But the team wide pressing defense was the key to the Tide’s comeback attempt. With all five players smothering their matchups in the last two minutes, a double-digit SCJN lead rapidly dwindled as the high school players took the decibel level to new heights. The team looks to build on that experience as the season draws to a close.

MS White Basketball
On January 27th, Friday night Coaches vs. Cancer action at Devon Prep saw the DP White team come up with a hard fought 20-16 victory over St. Helena’s team. Matt McHugh ‘28 took control early in the 2nd half scoring all 11 of his points and with smothering defense (4 steals). Teddy Celentano ‘28 added 5 points and did work on the boards as did Andrew Bouchard ‘27. Charlie Kleiner ‘28 and Gustav Najdek ‘28 added 2 points and solid, heady floor games to help in the win. On January 28th the team played SCJN (Gold) and won 32-29. Coaches vs. Cancer at Devon Prep continued on Saturday with DP White team getting a 32-29 win vs. SCJN on a 3 pointer by Charlie Kleiner ‘28. Charlie ended up with 5 pts while Teddy Celentano ‘28 had 10 pts and owned the glass. Matt McHugh ‘28 was relentless in the paint scoring 6 points. The Tide got contributions from Gustav Najdek ‘27 (4pts), David Vickers ‘27 (3 pts), Dean Huey ‘28 (2 pts) and Kellen Seal ‘28 (2 pts).  The team did a great job playing together and are on a 3 game win streak.
