Weekly Athletic Recap- 1/22

Weekly Recap

Below is our weekly athlete recap. This weekend will be our annual Coaches vs Cancer Weekend. We have a weekend filled of basketball games. Please stop down the gym and watch all of our basketball teams play and raise awareness for a great cause!

Congrats to our Athlete of the Week - Gustav Najdek

MS Blue Basketball

On January 18th our MS Blue team (6th graders) played St. Aloysius and won 25-12. Riding a second half surge, the DP 6th grade team defeated St. Aloysius, 25-12. Brian Daniel ‘29, reaching a level no opponent could equal, scored several put-backs. Colum Mooney ‘29, with several steals and heady plays, flashed a strong performance. Jackson Fisher ‘29 sliced and diced through the defense and helped put the game away with several timely baskets. Devon’s next game is 1/21 against Regina 1. On January 21st the team played Regina and lost 29-23. They lost a tight contest to Regina by a final score of 29-23. Regina’s 1-3-1 defense flummoxed Devon in the first half, but they began to find its vulnerabilities in the second. Despite facing a double-digit deficit with minutes to spare, the Tide turned up the heat with a full-court press. Their pressure forced several turnovers, which made for an exciting ending. Devon’s next game is Friday 1/27 at home versus St. Helena.

MS White Basketball

On January 21st the white team played Regina as well and lost 45-26. Devon Prep White lost to a very good Regina Angelorum team 45 - 26. Devon Prep kept it close at halftime 20 - 17, but then the shooting went cold.  Gustav Najdek led with a solid floor game and 9 points. Charlie Kleiner ‘28 and Matt McHugh ‘28 added 4 points each as well as playing scrappy, ball hawking defense. Teddy Celentano ‘28 had 3 points and a slew of rebounds. John Veith ‘28 chipped in 2 points. On January 22nd the team played Waldron and won 23-19. Sunday afternoon basketball proved to be good for the Devon Prep White team coming up with a 23 - 19 win vs. Waldron Mercy Academy. Gustav Najdek ‘27 (6pts) and Teddy Celentano ‘28 (5pts) led the way. Kellen Seal ‘28 had 4 points and some good hustle plays. Teddy Marvin ‘27 and Charlie Kleiner ‘28 added 3 points each. Matt McHugh ‘27 chipped in with 2 and played inspired defense before fouling out. Andrew Bouchard ‘27, Prasad Nunez ‘28, and Dean Huey ‘28 all gave all out effort on the defense.  Dean and Charlie led the team in assists getting teammates open shots. Shout out to David Vickers ‘27 - who has missed games due to injury. We miss you David!  Special recognition was given to our players by a parent from the Waldron team saying how wonderful and respectful our players are. Below is the email that the athletic department received

"Good afternoon! I am a parent of a player on Waldron Mercy's CYO Gold team. Our boys CYO team played your boys team on Sunday, 1/22 at 12:00.  I just wanted to share what a wonderful, respectful group of boys you have on that team.  Our boys have played some pretty rough teams and it was a JOY to see them laughing and talking to Devon's team during the game with smiles on their faces.  I just needed to commend you and their coach (I apologize I do not know his name.) for this group.

Thanks for sharing your incredible students with us! "

Great job guys!

MS Gold Basketball

On January 20th the team played St. Norbert’s and won 28-15. The Tide did a great job of not settling for 3’s and attacking the paint with aggression. We did a great job with limiting second chance points for the opposing team. This was their only game for the week. They are back at it this week.

Freshman Basketball

On January 16th played Father Judge and lost 63-54. Father Judge snapped Devon Prep's 14 game winning streak with a 63-54 win over the Tide.  Owen Raymond ‘26 finished with 22 points in the loss. The team was back at it January 17th vs. Salesianum and won 50-44. The team battled all game and wound up making enough winning basketball plays.  The team then played on January 20th vs. St. Joe’s Prep and came up a little short and lost 53-50. It what turned out to be a great game against a SJP team that was undefeated.  The team concluded their week on January 22nd vs. LaSalle and lost  another close game 54-50. Owen Raymond ‘26 scored a season-high 27 points on 9 three point shots.

JV Basketball

On January 16th the JV team traveled to  Father Judge and dropped a tough game against Father Judge 54-43. A short handed roster showed a ton of toughness throughout the entire contest. They were led in scoring by Brian Kamara ‘24 with 13 points. The team then followed that up the next day on January 17th vs. Salesianum and won 44-42. The JV team battled back from down 10 with about 3 minutes to go to defeat Salesianum 44-42. Multiple defensive efforts and points in transition cut the lead to 4 points. Greg Perullo ‘24 showed great poise to find Mike Pergolis ‘25 on the left wing as he buried a 3 to cut the lead down to 1 point. A great offensive possession with under 30 seconds left ended with Pergolis hitting the eventual game winning 3 after a dribble handoff. They then played St. Joe’s Prep and won 47-43. The team was able to erase a halftime deficit with some great defensive efforts, timely buckets and late game free throws. The team was led in scoring by Brian Kamara ‘24 with 12 points and Jabar Oakes ‘24 chipped in with 9 as well. They concluded their week against LaSalle and lost 51-36. The team was led in scoring by Greg Perullo ‘24 with 12 points and Jabar Oakes ‘24 with 8 points.

Varsity Basketball

The Tide battled throughout the game and were down by 2 going into the 4th quarter but fell apart in the fourth quarter and Father Judge pulled away. The team was back in action on Friday night against SJP and lost an excellent basketball game 49-48. While the team did not score more points than SJP in this game, they absolutely got better and learned a lot. That growth was evident on Sunday when they traveled to Lasalle and won 61-30. It is a very long season and the Tide continue to grow, That growth and development is key! They are back in action this Thursday vs Roman Catholic at Jefferson University.
