Weekly Athletic Recap for the Week of November 13th

Ice Hockey

We only had one of our winter teams start playing so far with our ice hockey team playing their first ever game under the Devon Prep Flag. On November 7th Varsity vs. Conestoga and we won 13-3. History was made by a few select Devon Prep students this week as the school’s brand new ice hockey team took to the ice for the first time in school history. The reviews were mixed as the young team, minus senior captains Nolan Hughes and Christian Ottesen, both won and lost lopsided contests. On Monday night, the first game in Devon Prep history, the Frozen Tide rolled Conestoga 13-3. Sophomore sniper James Gabriele ‘25 led the attack with eight points, while sophomore transfer Frankie Hartman ‘25, a smooth skating defenseman, led the defense along with Assistant Captain Brendan Bachman ‘25. Speedy freshman Tristan Apalucci ‘26 scored a few goals himself, but it was his counterpart, Jesse Xiong ‘26 that both started and ended the contest in dramatic fashion. Jesse scored the first goal in team history fifteen seconds into the game, and he capped a rare walkoff hockey win with a “Michigan” (google it). On November 9th our team was back in action against Holy Ghost Prep. Unfortunatley we lost 10-1. Wednesday night was not as kind to the Tide. With Grant Gale ‘26 between the pipes for a second consecutive start, the Frozen Tide ran into a buzzsaw in Holy Ghost Prep, one of the top teams in the state. Ghost proved to be every bit as good as their hype as they stunned Devon with a 10-1 win. The loss was Devon’s first loss and while the score wasn’t ideal, a few valuable lessons were learned by the young team.

Basketball

We also had our MS basketball team start practice this week. We had record turnout for the MS program with over 40 players coming out for the teams. Due to such a huge turnout we are going to have three MS basketball teams this year!
