Weekly Athletic Recap 10/23

Below is the weekly recap for athletics! 

Congrats to our athlete of the week- Nick Ciocca

Soccer

Our JV soccer team played Archbishop Carroll on Monday this week and lost 3-1. This was their last game of the season. On October 19th our middle school soccer team played St. Peter & Paul and lost 6-2. This was the last game of the regular season for the MS soccer team. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way they expected. The Tide took some bumps in this game and fell short to St. Peter & Paul 6-2. Goals were provided by John Veith ‘28 and Nico Del Prim ‘27. Sunday the MS soccer team will be participating in the Region 17 playoffs as the fourth overall seed in the league, which gives them a first round bye. On October 23rd the MS  team played in the CYO Quarterfinal vs. PJPII. We l ost 6-2. The Tide MS soccer team played a tough game against a solid opponent this afternoon. They came up short in the 2nd round of the  Region 17 playoffs to PJPII. Goals were provided by Nico Del Prim ‘27 (2). It was a great season and we plan to improve and get back after it next season.

Golf

On October 17/18th Nick Ciocca & John Curran played in the Individual PIAA State Championship. After the first round on Monday, Nick Ciocca ‘24 finished -2 and tied for second going into the final round on Tuesday. John Curran ‘25 finished +3. After the final day, Nick Ciocca ’24 captured the PIAA AA State Championship shooting a -6. It all came down to the last putt on the 18th hole. Nick put away the clutch birdie putt which gave him the victory over a very strong and competitive field. John Curran ‘25 also had a solid day two by shooting a +8, which placed him tied 11th overall.  On October 19th Team PIAA State Championship was played. The golf team placed 2nd at the PIAA Team State Championship. On October 19th the JV team played their last match of the year vs. Episcopal Academy and lost 233-230.  Consistent team performance with 4 golfers (Patrick Manion ‘26, Alex Pineda ‘25, Garett McGeehan ‘24, and Ron Wolf ‘24) shooting a 46. On October 20th the MS golf team played the Haverford School and lost 284-320 Devon Prep Middle School Golf Team ended their season at Linfield National Golf Course on Thursday October 20th 2022 with a match against The Haverford School. The teams played 7 holes of golf, with each school having 7 players each. The match was won by The Haverford School by the score of 284-320. Devon Prep was led by Andrew Carroccio ‘27 who had a score of 33 for the day, and was followed by Ben Veith ‘28 who had a score of 40 for the day.

Cross Country 

On October 22nd the cross country team competeted in the  PCL Championship @ Belmont Pat Rullo came in 11th place and earned 1st team all catholic. The other times were:  Pierce Rohlfing : 20:26 45th place ,Jake Murphy: 22:10 52nd , Ian Fabris: 22:48 55th, Wyatt Thiessen: 23:53 59th, Dan Mongiello: 25:08 63rd, Max Collins: 25:17 64th. The team finished in 8th out of 10, with 210 pts. Devon Prep XC had another solid day at Belmont as they competed in the PCL championship meet. Pat Rullo led the team with a first team All-Catholic performance and an 11th place finish with a time of 17:32. Pierce Rohlfing had another strong performance with a 45th place finish and a time of 20:26. Then, Jake Murphy ran an 8 second Belmont PR with a time of 22:10. A big highlight was Ian Fabrisr unning a 29 second PR for a time of 22:48. Rounding out the top 5 with a strong performance was Wyatt Thiessen who ran a 31 second PR with a time of 23:53. In order, Dan Mongiello and Max Collins finished with times of 25:08 and 25:17. Great job everyone and a big congrats to everyone who PR’d! On October 23rd the MS team ran the CYO Meet @ Belmont. The middle school cross country team ran their second to last race at Belmont Plateau this season, a warm up for next week’s championships. In the Boys Minor 3K race, Trevor Heebner-Elliott ‘29 (15:33) and Evan Martin ‘29 (15:35) each gave gutsy performances and stuck together most of the way. In the same race, Devak Shah ‘28 (18:21) and Oliver Parenteau ‘28 (20:50) both ran hard and came away with personal records. In the Boys Cadet 4K race, Revanth Kosaraju ‘27 weathered a fast start to finish strong with a PR of 20:59. The boys are back in action tomorrow at Marsh Creek State Park. Roll tide! On October 24th the MS team will run at Marsh Creek. On Thursday the high school team will compete in the district championship!
