Weekly Athletic Recap-10/15

Weekly Recap

Congrats to our Athlete of the Week-  Evan Martin '29

Soccer

On October 11th our Varsity team hosted Archbishop Carroll. This was also our Senior Day and we honored our six seniors: Jack Ferry, Pearse McVeigh, Duke Harrer, Evan Tissue, Christian Otteson and Connor Theile. The team won 2-1. We took another step forward with the second win in a row, lead by a great performance from Pearse McVeigh ’23 who had two goals. Archbishop Carroll made it a tough game but as a unit we battled hard for a well deserved victory. We now turn our focus to Roman Catholic on Friday. Unfortunately we lost 4-0 to Roman. The score doesn’t reflect how good we played on Friday. We dominated the game, creating many chances but, unfortunately we made mistakes that led to goals. Not the way we wanted to end our season but, we ended the season knowing we gave it our all till the last minute. Our October 11th our JV team hosted Church Farm School and won 7-0. The JV soccer team dominated, playing their game of the season in a 7-0 win. Matt Pascale ‘25 with the hat trick. Not far behind was Brandon Petticord ‘25 with two goals, followed by Charlie Krug ‘25 and Evan Young ‘26 who scored one each. John Barnhart ‘25 collected the shut out. On Friday they traveled to play Roman. They played well, with a great performance from Sam Kleiner ’25 playing in goal. but unfortunately lost 4-0. They are back in action Monday vs Carroll in their last game of the season.  Our MS soccer team played St Agnes on October 12th and unfortunately lost 5-1. The Tide MS soccer team had their hands full with a very competitive and talented St. Agnes team. This was a rematch of last year's Region 17 Championship. Unfortunately, the Tide lost 5-1 today. The boys fought hard and played a great first half with the 2nd half being a bit tougher to hold onto a tie. The only goal was scored by Nico Del Prim ‘27.

Golf

On October 11th  our varsity golf team traveled to Philmont  Country Club for the District Qualifier . Today was a team win with no opponent. We did exactly what we had to do-post a score. That being said, we didn’t fire our best rounds as a team, but nobody did. That’s tournament golf, this time of year it’s all about getting in with the lowest overall scores. We were only four shots behind LaSalle, while we beat SJP by five. They weren’t in our classification, but we always like to see where we stand against those guys, so congrats. Congrats to Nick Ciocca ‘24 and John Curran ‘25 as they will represent DP at the state finals this year (Individuals). They were the two lowest scores today.  On October 12th the Varsity team played in the Sub Regional Qualifier for the PIAA. Congratulations to the team on winning the event. The team now advances back to the PIAA championships next week where they will aim to defend their state championship! It was a GREAT win at a course we’ve never played, against a team (Palmerton) that essentially had a home match. Congrats to our seniors and the team in general. We had a day out there. We beat an all senior team in Palmerton, and a pesky New Hope team that only played with 4 guys due to one being sick. Nick Ciocca ‘24 was the low round of the day with a (-2) 70. John Curran ‘25 finished with a solid 77 and we rounded out the day with two scores in the 80s (Jack Dente ‘23—amazing round, Kidder Urban ‘23—way to grind) and one in the 90s (PJ Duffy ‘23—great job keeping your head in it).

Our MS golf team had their first match of the season on October 11th vs. Princeton Academy.Unfortunaley we lost 241-200. After a late start at Linfield National Golf course, the teams were able to finish six holes of golf. The match was won by Princeton Academy by the score of 200-241. Devon Prep was led by Paul(Tad) Manion ‘28 who had a score of 35 for the six holes, followed by Kellen Seal ‘28 who had a score of 38 for the day. Devon’s next match is scheduled for Thursday October 13th vs. Haverford School also at Linfield National Golf Course.

Cross Country

On October 12th our HS cross country team traveled to Belmont for the last PCL Meet oif the regular season.  The team finished 9th out of 10 teams. Today was an awesome day for the Devon Prep XC team as all 7 guys ran their best time at Belmont. Pat Rullo ‘24 led the way with a new Belmont PR of 17:27, placing 2nd in our race and 3rd overall. Next was Pierce Rohlfing ‘25 who ran a Belmont PR of 20:01, and placed 44th overall. He’ll be determined to break 20:00 next time! Ian Fabris ‘24 finished next with a PR of 23:17, which must have been by a fraction of a second. Then, rounding out the scoring, we had Max Collins ‘24 finish with 24:38.90 to tie his Belmont PR to the hundredth of a second. Spencer Collins ‘26 and Wyatt Thiessen ‘25 also ran their Belmont PRs  with the former running 25:05, and the latter 25:23. Awesome job everyone! Our times were: Pat Rullo: 17:27, 3rd , Pierce Rohlfing: 20:01 44th, Ian Fabris: 23:17 105th, Daniel Mongiello: 23:24 107th, Max Collins: 24:38 115th, Spencer Collins: 25:05 120th, Wyatt Thiessen: 25:23 125th. Our MS cross country team traveled to Shipley on October 16thto run in the Shipley Gator MS XC Invitational on the campus of The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr. On the 1.65 mile course, the boys again ran strong and established new personal records. Freddy Tucker ‘29  finished at 14:34 and Oliver Parenteau ‘28 came in at 18:06. Evan Martin ‘29 ran 13:04, finishing ninth place and coming away with a medal. Great running, boys! The team is back in action at Belmont Plateau next Sunday afternoon.

Crew

On October 16th the crew team competed in the Navy Day Regatta. The two doubles of Jack McGuinn/Haig Shamlian and Ethan Schaeffer/Nishan Shamlian finished 19th & 20th respectively out of 36 crews. They were just 2.8 seconds apart over the 2.2 mile course! The Varsity Quad had a top ten goal and finished 9th of 29 crews just 2 seconds off perennial powerhouses Haverford and Malvern and within striking distance of a few other spring season competitors. Rounding us out was the Novice Quad in the same event with a strong finish of 28th of 29 having been drastically slowed by a late collision of boats just before the finish line. Next up is Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in two weeks, our biggest regatta of the fall season. Another great day for Devon Prep Crew!!
