Weekly Recap January 16th

Congrats to our Athlete of the Week - Cooper Watson, Michael Degeorge, and Sam Kleiner

MS Blue Basketball
On January 10th the Blue team played Waldron Mercy Academy and lost 23-18. Devon Prep played a hard fought game last night, losing by 5 with a score of 23-18. Nate Ficoturo ‘29 had a great showing on both sides of the ball. Evan Martin ‘29 had some great fast break buckets and Colum Mooney ‘29 was a menace on defense. Next game will be a bounce back at home against SCNJ. The team then played on January 14th vs. St. Denis (Red) and lost 31-17. DP’s 6th grade team dropped a tough one to SCJN by a score of 31-17. Will Auckett-Stowe ‘29 took advantage of increased ball-handling duties by relentlessly attacking the basket and drawing fouls. As usual, Evan Martin’s ‘29 pressure up front forced turnovers and led to fast breaks. And a special shout-out goes to Fred Tucker ’29 for sinking his first basket on an assist from Mike Rice ‘29. Devon’s next game is 1/18 at St. Aloysius.

MS White Basketball 
On January 14th the White team played St. Denis (Red) and lost 31-9. The DP White team struggled in a 31 - 9 defeat to a much larger St Denis’ Basketball team. St. Denis dominated the boards - getting a slew of 2nd and 3rd shot opportunities. John Veith ‘28, Charlie Kleiner ‘28, and Gustav Najdek ‘27 all scored in the game. The Tide was able to keep it close until halftime with some scrappy play by Charlie, Gustav, John V. as well as John Sullivan ‘28, Dean Huey ‘28, and Kellen Seal ‘28.

MS Gold Basketball
On January 12th the Gold team played OLMC and lost 48-46. The MS Gold team lost a thriller tonight to OLMC 46-48. The Tide was down 17+ and fought back to almost tie the game at final buzzer. Hunter Mishock ‘27 led the team with 3 charges. The second half is where the team started to believe in each other and be positive to chip away and have a chance to send it into overtime in the final seconds. OLMC is the defending Helena tourney champ and are currently undefeated 16-0. They won the Philadelphia archdiocese’s championship last season and lost in the PA state final. They’re really tough kids. Overall, it was a great game for both sides. The Tide got better after we picked ourselves up off the court and started fighting.


 

January 14th  the Gold team played Sacred Heart School and won 52-26. The MS Gold team won 52-26 against Sacred Heart. Blaise DeSanto ‘27 and Aman Samdani ‘27 led scoring with 9 points each. Andrew Carroccio ‘27 chipped in with 6 points going 2/2 from three. Team did a good job playing defense and sharing the ball. That was our last regional game to go undefeated for the region 32 play. The team was back at January 14th Gold vs. St. Max and lost 58-43 in the St.. Helena Tournament. Cooper Fairlamb ‘27 led the way with points. All players played most of the game while being in foul trouble. The boys did a good job of uplifting each other and staying together as a team to fight to the end. Finally the team concluded their wee on January 15th Gold vs. St. Mary Magdalen and won 35-24. Caleb Tesafaye ‘28 led with 12 points and Cooper Fairlamb ‘27 second with 8 points. Both going 2 for 3 from three. Blaise DeSanto ‘27 contributed with 10 rebounds. The boys did a great job on defense switching on screens to prevent an easy way to the basket. Cooper made the All Tournament Team!.


 

Freshman Basketball
On January 9th the team played Spring-Ford and won 43-33. The Tide had a back and forth battle against Spring-Ford.  The game was close the first half but the tide pulled away late in the second half to secure a 43-33 victory. Owen Raymond ‘26 led the Tide with 14 points. On January 12th the freshman played Archbishop Wood and won 55-41. Freshman Owen Raymond ‘26 did nearly everything for the Tide in the Archbishop Wood gymnasium, scoring a game-high 17 points, directing the offense and controlling the tempo in Devon Preps 55-41 victory. The team played a double header on January 14th vs. Holy Ghost Prep & Louis E. Dieruff HS and won 58-55 vs. Holy Ghost Prep and won 45-26 vs. Louis E. Dieruff .The tide received a collective scoring effort from the entire team.

JV Basketball
On January 12th the JV team played Archbishop Wood and lost 54-51. The team battled back from an 11 point second half deficit to force overtime, but fell short in OT 54-51. The Tide showed an incredible amount of defensive effort and hustle plays in order to get the team back in the game, along with some timely makes. Ayinde McLendon ‘25 led the team in scoring with 18 points. On January 14th and played Louis E. Dieruff HS and won 46-41.The team was led in scoring by Greg Perullo ‘24 with 24 points.

Varsity Basketball
On January 12th the varsity basketball team played Archbishop Wood and lost 57-50. In a great PCL game the team went into the 4th quarter with a lead but could not hold on. The team is back in action this week vs Father Judge and SJP. 

Wrestling
On January 10th the team played St. Joe’s Prep and lost. This evening the Tide took a ride down the Schuylkill Expressway to take on PCL rival, St. Joe’s Prep! The team fought hard and gained valuable mat experience against a tough opponent. Each match was a battle and the Tide plans to redeem themselves as they match up against Church Farm School on Wednesday! Devon had solid efforts from Michael Cline-Thomas ‘26, Liam MacDonald ‘25, Chris Rohner ‘25, Sam Kleiner ‘25, Shane Dugan ‘25, Cooper Watson ‘23, and Michael Degeorge ‘25. The team was back at it on January 11th vs. Church Farm School and lost 42-30. The Devon Prep Tide Wrestling team had a big night as they hosted their 2nd home match in school history on campus against Church Farm School! Having the home crowd on their side, the team was able to string together several victories to help them continue their growth as a young program! Pins were provided by Shane Dugan ‘25, Dylan Kenneson ‘25, and Michael Degeorge ‘25. Other victories were provided by Chris Rohner ‘25 and Sam Kleiner ‘25. This match has raised the spirits of the team as they head into their tournament this weekend. Next up, the Tide will travel to Church Farm School for their annual Individual Invitational Tournament on Saturday!
 

 

The team traveled to January 14th vs. Church Farm School Individual Invitational Tournament. The Tide Wrestling team drove down Lancaster Avenue to their neighbors over at Church Farm School to participate in their annual CFS Individual Invitational Tournament on Saturday. It was an extremely successful day for the young program, where three of the Tide placed on the podium and the team came in 11th overall out of 13 teams in points. Sam Kleiner ‘25 went 3-2 on the day, securing 5th place in the 139 weight class. Cooper Watson ‘23 went 3-1 on the day, securing 3rd place in the 215 weight class. Michael Degeorge ‘25 went 3-2 on the day,  securing 5th place in the 285 weight class. Other strong performances were by Michael Cline-Thomas ‘26, Lim MacDonald ‘25, Dylan Kenneson ‘25, and Finlay Manifold ‘26.
 

Ice Hockey
On January 9th the hockey team went to the Hill School and lost 7-2. The Devon hockey team fell to Hill School on Monday by a score of 7-2. Brendan Bachman ‘25 scored his first goal as a member of the Frozen Tide and Frankie Hartman ‘25  added a tally as well. Star freshman Grant Gale ‘26 had another impressive performance, stopping more than 40 shots and Jesse Xiong ‘26 was back in uniform for Devon after recovering from a foot injury.

Bowling
On January 10th the bowling team played Archbishop Ryan and  lost 4-0. The Tide took on Archbishop Ryan in their first home match of the new year. After battling through three tough games the squad came up a bit short falling to Archbishop Ryan 4-0. The Tide looks to bounce back against Archbishop Wood on Thursday! The team was back in action on January 12th vs. Archbishop Wood and won 3-1. The Tide looked to get back on track against fellow PCL member Archbishop Wood. The squad did just that! After a hard fought battle with Archbishop Wood, Devon took 3 out of 4 games to secure the victory.
This Friday night, Devon Prep hosts a triple header vs SJP. It is our Wall of Fame weekend and we are going to be inducting three former athletes into the Wall: John Donahue '02, Clarke Gilbert '02, and Paul D'Alonzo '66
